What did we do in class today?
Remember- all assignments originally scheduled to be handed in tomorrow are to be completed in addition to the assignments I have added. Please read this post in detail. Send me a remind message if you have questions. I have also updated the pre-lab for the diffusion lab at the bottom of this post. If we have another snow day I will post assignments for tomorrow. As of post time, our test has been moved to MONDAY, JANUARY 22. I do not generally intend to message you ultra frequently on Remind, but snow days are a special exception for the sake of clarity. Today's Assignments: 1. In your BILL, complete all questions for the Plasma Membrane Diagramming/Modeling activity (make a preliminary plan for the items you will use to model the structures, but do not build it). Remember, I clearly understand that we have not discussed these topics yet. We will discuss them as a group to clear up any and all misunderstandings. Your ability to interpret and construct models is an essential component to this course. Make a list of questions you have or highlight your misunderstandings in your BILL to be sure you ask these questions when we return to class. Helpful resources (not required, just helpful): Fluid Mosaic Model Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqsf_UJcfBc Cell membrane (don’t be fooled by “Biology For Kids” this is a helpful resource): http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_membrane.html Membrane Proteins: http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_membprot.html PhSchool Membrane Tutorial (use the navigation on the left to help you): http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/biocoach/biomembrane1/intro.html Bozeman Cell Membrane Video: http://www.bozemanscience.com/015-cell-membrane Biology for Kids has several other helpful pages- click around if necessary 2. In your lab notebook, complete the data collection for your food item from the Food Labels lab (documents with instructions and labels posted below) and calculate the standard deviation and standard error for calories/gram for your FOOD ITEM ONLY. Remember to leave space for the other food items. Even if you know how to use a graphing calculator to calculate standard deviation you must show your work for this calculation (you may use the calculator for the addition, subtraction, division, and square root for the calculation). If you do not know the graphing calculator short cut for standard deviation, I will teach in you class when we gather our group data. 3. In your lab notebook, complete the pre-lab for the diffusion lab. I have attached the lab handout to this post for your guidance, but you do not need to print it. Pre-lab: a) Read the lab handout in its entirety b)Watch and take notes over the following short animations. i.Diffusion: http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/9834092339/student_view0/chapter5/how_diffusion_works.html ii.Osmosis: http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/9834092339/student_view0/chapter5/how_osmosis_works.html iii.Diffusion and osmosis in cells: http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/9834092339/student_view0/chapter5/animation_-_osmosis.html c) Hypothesize what “cell characteristic” will be most impactful on the above processes. Remember hypotheses are specific and explained using your knowledge of the processes involved in the lab. (You are not required to watch this video, but it may provide some hints about impactful cell characteristics http://www.bozemanscience.com/why-are-cells-small) Previously Scheduled Assignments: Due Wednesday 1/17:
